In Northern CA i would say Santa Cruz is probaby the best beach town and probably the warmest too. But overall it's kind of cool along the NorCal coast in summer and the water is never warm enough to swim in w/o a wetsuit. Southern CA beaches and ocean temps are much warmer in summer overall, so I'd look into San Diego if you want to surf and bum around for the summer in SoCal. If you dont' want SoCal then I think Santa Cruz would be a good place to go.

Smaller towns in the southern part of the state, maybe Santa Barbara/Goleta.

San Diego. If you want to go surfing almost anywhere in Northern California, you better qualify for the Polar Bears because the water is cold and the winds are strong.

I second Santa Cruz! Very cool little town, with lots of "beach bums" to keep you company... other nice coastal towns are Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, and down south to Monterey/Carmel and San Luis Obispo. Plenty of nice beaches in LA & San Diego too, but I don't know them as well.

True... but lots of my friends growing up were surfers, and just wore a good wetsuit. I wouldn't do it, especially with the shark threat - but they didn't seem to mind!

Check out Venice and Santa Monica. Warmer weather than what you'll find in northern California. Venice is a little "funky" and has some "charecters" that hang out at the beach. the thing about Venice though is the water is disgusting. I was there about two weekends ago and it was brown and foamy. Santa Monica is better but still a fairly polluted beach. My friends that live in LA say they go north to Malibu or south to Redondo/Hermosa when they go to the beach. LA County beaches are just not very clean overall, Orange County and San Diego County beaches tend to be cleaner, clearer water, and slightly warmer too.

I wouldn't say the SoCal beaches are cleaner, but the water is a bit warmer. Right now, NorCal ocean temps have been around the low 60s, which is actually pretty mild, while SoCal has been in the high 60s. If you plan on NorCal, only Santa Cruz / Capitola would be fun for a whole summer. At least it's pretty consistenly warm and sunny in the afternoons, and there is lots of beachy stuff to do. Otherwise, San Diego is great.
