Union Street (not to be confused with Union Square) also has shopping (or window shopping), resturants and bars and is walking distance from Chestnut Street which has more of the same. Haight is the official hippy neighboorhood, but the vibe for me is more of a touristy/trendsetter feel, as there are lots of boutiques with designer stuff. In fact, there seems to be more and more less hippy stores, but you'll still see the guys hanging on the street, selling handmade pipes... and endless people begging for change.

Hayes Valley is fun (like 6 blocks from the painted ladies) with some cute shops, some restaurants and bars, and an awesome drag queen bar. In the Castro/Market area there are some really cool places for drinks and food (Barracuda and Lime).

HTH

Hi all. Thanks for all of the help you have given me. I had a great time in SF, despite a few setbacks, like losing my Muni pass and missing the Golden Gate bridge tour. I did make it out to the bridge on Tuesday, but it was so foggy, I couldn't see a thing! I was disappointed because I wanted to see the sights in the pics that Gizmo took, but hey, I experienced a San Francisco fog! I did take a pic of a small portion of the GG bridge from a hill in Lafayette Square earlier in the week, so that was cool.

I also took a ferry across the bay to Alameda. The ferry was so relaxing and it was a great experience. On the way back though, I sat outside in the upper deck and nearly freezed to death as we sped along the water. But I had to take those pictures! I also experienced riding the cable cars, which was alot of fun. Also, those hills in SF are killers. I thought I could handle them, no sweat. LOL I thought I was going to pass out, but it was more exercise than I usually do.

Overall, I had fun. I met so many helpful people there, I was amazed. I met people in the East Bay and within the city. When I couldn't find my way, people there would help me out. I may post some pics of my trip on here once I figure out how to get them on. Thanks again everyone.

mission? very nice. but be VERY careful after dark. the projects in the area and the ethnocultural attraction of tourists and visitors from other neighborhoods make for some very bad encounters.

Where is the Mission neighborhood in SF? I also think I rode through the Tenderloin neighborhood on the way to the GG bridge. Does Geary St run through there?
