Exactly. There's nothing inherently bad about being a "Young Urban Professional."

People assume all "yuppies" are privileged, old-money, trust-fund country club types...but the reality is that is a very small portion of the population.

I am, by definition, a "yuppie"...as are most of my friends. All of us came from middle-class backgrounds. We worked hard in college and in grad school (most taking out student loans and working night jobs to get by), and now that we're done we want to enjoy a care-free life in a fun city for a few years before getting married, settling down, and having kids. What is so wrong about that? Hell, who wouldn't want to do that for at least a few years of their life?

If someone is a prick, they are a prick. Period. That's a character flaw. You can be an 80 year old grandpa living in rural Nebraska and be a prick, you can be a 15 year old suburban teenager and be a prick, you can be a blue-collar rust-belt prick, you can be a "yuppie" and be a prick.

This is the best post in this thread so far. While I cannot argue with the view that many Yuppies are self-absorbed, etc., that still remains a stereotype, and to some extent it is jealousy talking. And it remains true that there is nothing wrong with being a young urban professional, just like there is nothing wrong with being an old rural skilled worker, or a farmer, or anything else which is an honest way to make a living.

Default What is reality after all?

Allthough you were not responding to me, but to another poster, I find it interesting how you define "reality". There are many realities, and most of them are just as "real" as the others. The world of engineering, for example, with its knowledge of the real physical world and the mathematics which underpins it all, is no less real (and may ultimately be more real) than the hardscrabble reality of how the poor survive, which is also an important part of reality in the broadest sense. And no, I am not an engineer. It is perhaps the ultimate put-down to define other people's reality as unreal while elevating one's own reality to the status of the exclusively real. It is basically tunnel-vision.

Although in fairness we're now stereotyping...just a different group.

Ghetto people are not always poor. It's an attitude and anyone can have a certain attitude.

K I can tell your the grey area type, life isnt black it isnt white its different shades of grey so to speak and for the most part I cant challenge that.

The person didnt use the word poor or low class or working class or low means, he purposefully chose the word ghetto, and all the negative connotations that goes with it and even if this person has even been to the "ghetto" he/she has no connection to the community, did not grow up there, etc etc. There is a clear cut difference between knowing something in the abstract and knowing something personally, I dont think you would argue that.

When I talk about the realities of life, Im talkin about the facts, cold hard truths that are not debatable. Your response to me is all you talkin theory and the reality that I am talkin about is the state of many low income communties, communities that are plagued by the drug trade, high crime rates, lack of jobs, many of these have been shipped over seas in the last 30 years, were talkin about how state government directs funds to public schools, the reality that people growing in those places will, atleast during childhood, have a lower standard of living than whatever community said yuppies are coming from. Theres nothing else to say, were not talking about just the different sides of the tracks, were talking worlds apart, and for some one to make such a snobby incosiderate comment, to me, IMO, shows staggering levels of ignorance that is a natural result of living in the same habitat so to speak your entire life and not knowing **** about how other people live, and this view is becoming increasingly common as we get more and more rich yuppies from all over the map choosing to live here and bringing there head stuck up there ass attitude.
