Okay, I tried my luck in the San Jose Forum. I was just asking for any good barber or stylist in the South Bay area. It has been a week and I have received two replys both were for barbers. I am getting worried. I have not done my own hair in years.

Are there any Dominican Hair Salons in San Francisco?
Can anyone recommend a good barber for my son?
Can anyone recommend a good beautician for me? I don't wear weave or any updos. I wear a basic layered bob.

I don't know of any Dominican salons in the bay area. I think that's more of an East Coast thing.

There is a good barber named Ken who works out of a barber shop on Divisadero @ Turk Street in San Francisco. People come to him from different cities because he's so good. I forget the name of the shop... I want to say Chicago's, but I don't think that's it. They also have a salon for women there, but I can't vouch for that. The mens side has people waiting outside before they open.

Jazzy'z is a salon on Fillmore Street across from the new Yoshi's. Sherie there is good. There is also Denise at Hair Play, who I really like. Both of these are also in San Francisco.

Perhaps check out Oakland, which is known for black salons.

HTH

Have you tried looking at reviews on Yelp? San Francisco Restaurants, Dentists, Bars, Beauty Salons, Doctors
I could suggest simply going to the African-American neighborhoods (like Bayview/HP, where I live), but that wouldn't help you much... I think reading reviews on Yelp really could be helpful, since that's how I have found a lot of services here. Good luck!

Thanks you for your responses.

I actually have looked on Yelp. I tried to get a feel for what kind of hair styles are done by the beautician by looking at the salon's website pictures. Most didn't have websites and those that did seemed to specialize in weave. I guess I am going to have to wait until I get there and hopefully I will run into someone with nice hair and I can ask them where they go.

That's actually not a bad idea! My sister & I have really curly/coarse/thick hair, and she asked a classmate (way back when) for her stylist's name, since her hair always looked fabulous... I think my sister still goes to that stylist, so personal recommendations are a good way to go.

Finding a good black stylist is honestly hard unless you do know someone, in my experience, and I'm born and raised here!

I am currently searching for someone to do a good weave while my hair grows, but haven't found anyone I trust, although I do have people (like the ones I've recommended) who I trust to flat iron and cut my naturally curly hair.

I wish you good luck. If you do find someone you love, please post on Yelp. I think those of us utilizing the black beauty places don't post nearly enough.
