My cousin, who is 30, from Albany, NY, wants to live in this area. He is married, and has 3 kids. They are 1, 3, and 5. He wants a safe place, near a big city, with cultural events, good colleges, good schools (elementary, junior high, high) very nice homes, and a good job market. He is a very good lawyer. He likes the Sunnyvale and San Jose area, but he's not sure if it's the right choice. Please help him!

How much do you plane to spend?? $1 mil for a nice home in the suburbs (for 3 kids) is not out of the question

As for the job market, the unemployment rate in CA is now 8.2% and probably going higher

Palo Alto.. but good luck footing the bill. In the Bay Area it's all a matter of how much you can spend, because there are a lot of people with a lot of money here. $1 million will not get you a four-bedroom house in Palo Alto. $1.5M will, but it won't be very big or have much land. Same story in Los Altos which is a little sleepier but just as desirable. For my money, Almaden Valley, San Jose is a better value - ZIP code 95120 - and I hope that I can live there someday. Issue there is that it's a little farther to the jobs, and the traffic on 85 is just awful.

Walnut Creek is a very nice area. They have great schools and the real estate isn't as steep as Palo Alto, San Jose etc. If you look online for houses in Palo Alto, you need to make sure which part its in because half of Palo Alto is nice and the other half is in really bad shape.

Specifically the city of East Palo Alto.. even the bits that are west of Highway 101 are not that nice.

Under $1m, your cousin's best bet is the Cambrian area of San Jose, so long as you're south of Hwy 85 and west of Harwood avenue, where he can get a very nice 1700 sq ft 4 bdrm for under $800k-- cheap by Bay Area standards.

Go for the Noddin Elementary School district: API score of 899 and rising as more and more relocating professionals with young kids find themselves priced out of Palo Alto, Cupertino and Los Gatos.
