The latimes just had an article about the ucla and usc rivarly also lacking the fervorsity it once had. I think being in a major metropolitan area with a cosmopolitan population and also the presence of pro sports dampers the amount of enthusiasm for college sports. This would contrast to say Columbus, OH or Austin TX. Being from the east bay now, which might taint my perception slightly , but I really dont see much support for the Cardinal beyond certain alumni. I know people who follow cal football without really being associated with the school, and see Cal gear for sale at sears and target.

i see your point. but theoretically, don't UCLA and USC get advantage of no NFL while Cal and Stanford have to put up with the 49ers and Raiders?
