Hi, I'm thinking about accepting a job that would be very near the Embarcadero BART station. I've never been to SF so I have no clue where to start looking for an apartment. Ideally, I'd like to find a studio/one bedroom for under 1000. It should be within walking distance of a BART station. Either side of the Bay... doesn't really matter to me. I'm living in New York City right now, so I'm used to an urban environment, but obviously I don't want to live in a "bad" area. Oh, and I don't plan on having a car, at least for the first few months, so an area that's hard to live without would not be good. Any suggestions on what areas to start looking would be great!

You will have a hard time getting close to a BART station on the west side of the water for $1000. Downtown Oakland/Lake Merritt, maybe. You could also aim for being close to a Muni light rail line, it runs to the Embarcadero station as well.

You could get a studio for around $1000, it won't be walking distance to the BART, but you could be close to a muni stop (bus stop) and take it to a BART station, which isn't that bad.

Check on craigslist.com these neighborhoods, some won't have any available for that price, but it's worth checking, you never know.

USF/Panhandle
Alamo Square
Financial District
Lower Nob Hill
Nob Hill
Lowe Pacific Heights
Russian Hill
North Beach

If you can't find any in those areas, try

Downtown/Civic/Van Ness
Inner Richmond

You may also want to look into shared apartments considering your budget.

Perhaps some place in the Sunset or Richmond (western part of SF). You could ride a light rail streetcar (much of it underground) to the Embarcadero station which is shared with BART. Trip takes about 20 minutes.

But The light rail street car (the N Judah) only services the Sunset district.
The Richmond district is serviced by Muni buses which can take forever if you are way outer Richmond and its not an Express bus 38 Geary.

My mistake . I was thinking about some place along the N line would be good. Also somewhere near Glen Park which has a BART station or near Balboa Park which has both light rail and BART might work.

Hence, why you want to search Inner Richmond and not just Richmond.
