Hey there,

I've found a really nice home for rent in north part of Concord - just south Highway 4 between the 242 and Port Chicago Highway. We looked at the house tonight and it was great inside & out. The neighborhood seemed quite quiet too.

I'm just looking for your thoughts on the area. I'm going back tomorrow to see the place in the daylight and probably sign a lease.

I just want to make sure I'm making a good move for my stay-at-home wife and 8-month old son.

Thanks in advance for any of your opinions!

Cheers,
Lee

You probably have a better sense than most of us do about whether that's a good part of town. It seems nice enough; the well-known sketchy part of Concord is around Monument & Detroit. What I can tell you about is some of the environmental factors. Traffic on 4 and 242 is a terrible grind, and with both freeways nearby, you may have either a lot of noise, a lot of dust/pollution, or both. The area has a BART station, which has the distinction of being the least-used in the system. There is a naval station on the other side of Port Chicago Hwy, but you probably wouldn't even realize it was there.

You probably have signed by now but... We just bought a house on the other side of Port Chicago and my PIL's and some of their relatives live in the area you are talking about. My wife grew up there. It's a decent area. More decent the farther away (North) from Olivera you get. These days it's a medium crime area according to a Concord PD officer we were talking to. Thanks mostly to the thug types that live/frequent the apartments along Olivera. Apparently they are a prime location for drug sales. Aside from that area, I would describe North Concord as pretty much middle to slightly lower middle class. It's an OK area overall. You'll want to eventually move to an area with better schools or make other arrangements for education.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Our wee fella will be starting 4 years from now - that'll give us plenty of time to look for homes in Walnut Creek or Pleasant Hill, where the schools are better. We spent quite a bit of time in Concord this weekend and think we'll be happy there for the time being.

Thanks again!
