We are considering relocationg to the SF area, and I am wondering if there is an area of the city that is predominately Russian. Is there affordable housing in the area or is it easily reachable by public transit? Any info/advice is welcomed.

There is a large Russian community in the Richmond District, but it is not predominantly Russian. It is one of the more affordable places in town, and can be easily reached by taking the 38 Geary bus from downtown. I think that traditionally the Russian community was congregated around the Orthodox church at Geary and 26th (Holy Virgin Cathedral), but I don't know if that is the case anymore.

The "Richmond District" in SF has a large Russian community. There's a beautiful Russian Orthodox Church and several bakeries/delis near 24th and Geary Blvd also.

I also used to have many Russian neighbors when I lived in the "Sunset District" also. I don't know what would be considered affordable for you, but these areas are generally less expensive than most other parts of the city. Both areas can be reached via public transportation (but the outer parts ((closer to the beach if you look on a map)) less so.

Thanks for the info! It does not to be predominately Russian, just enough for my wife and daughter to be able to buy Russian groceries/products and feel more at home. The church would be a very important piece too.

Yes, the central Richmond area has a large Russian community - several churches, and a fairly large selection of bakeries, restaurants, and markets. There's tons of stuff along Geary between Park Presidio and 28th or so. Public transporation is good, especially if you're going downtown. And, like someone else noted, it's also cheaper (all relative) than many parts of town. It's also quite safe, and very family-friendly. We LOVE the Richmond!

There are loads of russians near where I live, in the outer Richmond. There are also numerous shops where they sell Russian type food and papers along geary blvd and some parts of clement. The area is frequently foggy/overcast and always windy. Bundle up.
