By Laney College-which is right next to the Lake Merritt BART station is not bad. It seems to be primarily chinese seniors(being the edge of Chinatown) and hipsters.

I live in this area, and commuted to SF via MacArthur BART for a while. In my opinion, east of BART is totally fine. I used to walk from BART to my apartment (about 10 blocks) daily at 10-11 p.m. and never felt uncomfortable or threatened at all. Telegraph, 40th, and Broadway are all still fairly busy at this time, so I was never worried. While I haven't actually lived west of this area, it seems a little more sketchy and the general opinion of people who know the area better seems to follow suit. There seem to be a lot of people saying that MacArthur BART itself is dangerous, which I have never experienced at all (and I still use it twice every day, including 8-9 p.m.). It's almost always busy, so even if you are arriving at night, there will be plenty of other people around, plus there is a BART attendant right there, and often a BART cop parked outside.

That's a cool area, but it's just too close to West Oakland. It has always been more than you would think to live there. Rockridge is a little safer, but crime happens there, too.
