I recently started thinking about moving to California (AGAIN!) after living in Sacramento a few years ago. I made a new gay friend there and he's encouraging me to come. While I am very excepting of people, I am still quite conservative, especially by SF standards. What neighborhoods would be socially and religiously comfortable for me? Single, thirty-something, multi-racial registered nurse with no children.

Thanks. Any advice about SF social/religious climate and neighborhoods would be appreciated!!

You can move wherever you like and please don't tell everyone you have a gay friend or gay husband to prove that you are ok with diversity. LOL. The bay is not as liberal as you think and the diversity comes from the mixes of both liberal and conservative views.

Um, that was not my purpose in mentioning that. Just pointing out that he's the one encouraging me to move there. I was thinking about San Diego until he starting trying to win me over on SF. I don't need to do anything to "prove" I'm o.k. with diversity, I'm multi-racial for crying out loud. I'm diversity walking. But thanks for the advice.

Sounds like you belong in the Avenues....multi-racial and moderate. Might want to look into the Sunset....

Are these areas in SF proper? Or suburbs? I'm going for city life if possible.

The Avenues are definitely within SF proper. The Sunset is to the south of Golden Gate Park, the Richmond is to the north of Golden Gate Park.

Is Inner or Outer Richmond better?

Neither! I recommend Cole Valley or the western part of the Mission area near Dolores Park. Here is some info from a previous post.

I'm sure you can find other liberal conservatives in SF...in most neighborhoods. But I caution you, you may see more than you're bargaining for in any neighborhood. If you are easily shocked by whatever you are easily shocked by, you may want to remain in Sac.

What in the world is a "liberal conservative"? Is that like a Christian Atheist? Or being skinny obese? etc.
