I was thinking of Burlington Vt for a while but it may be a little too remote, mad winters (I may have a small inner hippie but one who wears heels, not birks!), although a lovely place. Thanks to everyone for all their comments - much appreciated.
I like Woody Allen's attitude to LA. He dislikes LA just as you do though he adores NYC

I may be wrong as I don't live in the US but it seems LA is the only alternative to NYC when it comes to great opportunities.

OP, I live and am based out of work in Manhattan. I'll tell you upfront, you'll extremely MISS the hustle and bustle.

Despite SF being regarded as the most 'city place' on the west coast, it's extremely laid back, great friendly people (especially if they find out from you're NY), and they DO work considerably less in comparison to Manhattan (I used to i-bank when 100-120+ hrs was norm, yes it's possible), so I loved these aspects about SF just as much as you probably will. But...

for me personally, after a month or so you itch to get back to Manhattan. I'm not trying to sound elitist or anything but, you really can't match the city's pulse, vibrancy, and social/professional scene anywhere else no matter how you wanna bend things...

If you're niche is in VC/tech startup SF might be a better fit..if this is a fiscal decision since I know NYC is more expensive, that's very understandable, SF makes sense. However, if you have both options open, I say rent as opposed to buy in SF first, to see if it really is something you want, and if you don't get that NYC itch back, enjoy the laid back vibe and more space!

NYC and LA the only great opportunities? Couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe if you only consider showbiz...

We must take into consideration the showbiz as it's a huge biz. The majority of main showbiz stars live in LA and NYC.

Although I live in VA I have lived in various places. To me it is hard for a New Yorker to adjust to life anywhere outside of The Big Apple. Other than Paris, I have not found anyplace that rivals NYC in its vibrancy, energy, style and importance. I have observed many ex-New Yorkers move South and I feel real sorry for them in trying to adjust. I am often amused sometimes in the southerners response to those "yankees coming down here and upsetting their lifestyles". New York City is a place to go if you want to feel you are alive! SF is a beautiful, sophisticated City but California gives me the feeling I am living on the edge of a cliff.
