rule of thumb: all those pay to see rental places are not worth it.

If this helps, I can tell you that my junior one-bedroom (a size in-between that of a studio and a full-fledged one-bedroom) was $1250/month two years ago (and it started at $1080/month in February of '06). I think the actual studio apartments near Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton are somewhere around $1200 now. We later moved to a one bedroom across the street for $1400/month. To be frank, I don't think you can even pull of a studio for $800 or $900/month if you want to live in a safe and somewhat desirable area. If it's not possible to get a roomate or alternative living situation, I'd hold off....

Also, if you did end up living in the East Bay (Livermore, Dublin/Pleasanton, etc.) don't forget to add your BART expenses in as well. When I lived in the Bay a round-trip to the City was somewhere around $9.00-$10.00. I think you can get some sort of a discount pass if you work there, but from what I understand, the discount isn't that much. This means you could spend around $50.00/week on BART fare alone...

Seriously, no. I live in San Jose, where rents are a bit lower than SF, and have an old studio apartment (cute, but no amenities whatsoever) for $850. And that is cheap for my area. Studios in the larger complexes go for $1000. The rent may have come down a little bit, but not that much.

Rents may be cheaper in Oakland, but anywhere that's $800 a month in Oakland is going to be scary. Plus, when you add in the transportation costs (driving across the bridge or taking BART), it doesn't save much, if anything.

Possible, but still not likely. And even if you do, it will probably be in a scary area.

Places that cheap are 99.9% of the time...dumps. Visit in person...you can find some on craigslist, but once you see them in person, you will change your mind.

Why not have room mates. It's a common practice in San Francisco.
