50 years ago California was a place where the bourgeoisie could attain a good quality of life without being up to their eyeballs in debt. Now, our coastal cities, like the others in that deck, are heading in the direction of becoming Monoco clones. Play and living places for the wealthy global elite. You have to have amenities and a reasonably good climate to appeal to that vertical. It's great if you are one of the elites or someone profiting handsomely off of them (like I am). But for the masses, it sucks. Is that what we want?
