Hey all, I'm gonna be in SF staying near Fisherman's Wharf, and plan on walking to union square (which I looked up and directions say its about 1.5 miles away) and china town (about 1 mile from where i'm staying). I also looked up 'areas to avoid' because of crime, and my route doesn't seem to conflict with these 'dangerous areas'.

Besides common sense, are there any bad areas on a typical walking or trolley route from fisherman's wharf to chinatown and union square??

The route between the Wharf and Chinatown and Union Square is pretty safe, especially during the day. The biggest issues you will face will be the hills and the crowds of tourists in those areas

You can take the "F" line (antique streetcars) from the wharf, along the waterfront, to about Market and Powell and walk about 2 blocks to Union Square and a little further to Chinatown. Or you can take a cable car from the foot of Hyde St near Ghirardelli Square with stops near Chinatown and Union Square Cable Car Routes & Maps. Walking up the hills can be tiring.

heres a tip if you walk in the bad areas, carry your camera & map in a shopping bag or plastic bag to conceal your tourist look.

the panhandlers and thieves will be looking for people like you to ask for money or rob

try not to look like a tourist

You will be fine. That area is extremely safe and swarming with tourists. I used to live on Powell St, right in the middle of your route, and I can assure you that you don't need to worry. Enjoy your holiday!

If you walk from Fisherman's Wharf to Union Square, walk down Columbus through North Beach and then turn right onto either Stockton or Grant, which will take you through Chinatown. Not only is this route far more active and interesting than others, but you will also avoid the big hills.

I'll also be visiting & staying near Fisherman's Wharf & plan to go to Union Square, Alcatraz, & a museum or two. I won't be renting a car either. I'll be there during the week (Tues - Fri).

What are the best Chinese & seafood retaurants?

Anyone have any more info?
