Hi Im have lived in the U.S. all of my life and I think San Francisco is absolutely beautiful. However, I don't know if I would want to live there permanently. But, it is beautiful and there is such a diversity of cultures there which is really neat. It is very crowded. Have you ever come to visit to make sure that is where you would like to live? There is a site called career builders that would be a great place to look for jobs. Also checking out places to rent is a great idea. If you google San Francisco you can find out pretty much anything you will need to know. The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce is a good place to look up too for information. Again it is a beautiful city and I hope if that is your choice you will find it to be everything you are hoping for.Things are changing very fast here with our economy and everything. I pray you check everything out so that you can make a wise decision for your life. My grandfather was from Dublin Ireland and I have always wanted to go to Ireland someday. Actually I have often even thought about living there if it were possible. Probably the same as you are thinking about coming here. Anyways my friends I hope and pray and wish the best for you both. I look forward to hearing how your journey goes.

Take your chances with the Green Card lottery or have an employer bring you over on a, I believe it's an L1, if I'm not mistaken.

Those are the ways most folk get over here.

Deciding where to live in SF depends a lot on your savings and income.

You may want to contact the US Embassy in your geography (not sure what they've got set up in N. Irl, you may have to contact the big one in London) - they should have the most current info about Greencard Lottery rules and regulations.

There is a forum for legal immigration; you can get advice on the immigration part of your question there.

Unless you have extremely specialized skills (and even if you do) your chances of getting a job right now, especially if you don't currently have permission to work in the United States, are extremely small, as unemployment is very high. It's tough enough to get a job even if you do have a visa/are a citizen.

Where you can live will depend on your budget and where you're working, as well as personal preferences. But I think it's jumping the gun to worry about that now, as it could take quite a long time to secure a visa. Browse Craigslist to look at apartments to see what's out there, and then when/if you do get a visa and/or jobs you'll have a better sense of what's available in your budget and where.
