Considering the electorate in Oakland we already know thats not going to happen. Oaklands electorate is its own worst enemy, electing the same people over and over again regardless of what they did or did'nt do. Like SF, only slightly worse.

Wrong, Jerry Brown actually is the one who started the revitalization of Oakland to what we are seeing now. But I'm not surprised you don't get it. You're not from here.

I have to agree.

I know many people dislike him, but I think Ignacio De La Fuente would be an awesome mayor.

A wheeler and dealer who can get things done. Someone like Mayor Daley(corrupt but productive).

I keep a reasonable familiarity with real estate development in Oakland, and I can't tell you how many times I've been utterly disgusted at the opposition to development in Oakland.

Usually the opposition is headed by community groups organized by irritating progressives that seek to preserve grit and blight. Its irritating as all hell.

Worst of all, many of the people who oppose development in the hood don't even live there.

Oak to 9th is the epitome of their hypocrisy.

Its a $3 Billion development project proposed for the land in btwn 880 and the Estuary from Oak to 9th along Embarcadero.

They claimed that it was going to block off public access to the waterfront. Only thing is, its already blocked off and neglected by the public.

How they convinced 26,000 people to sign a petition to halt the project is beyond me. After years in legal limbo, the project that should have been done by now is mired in made up controversy.

Jerry Brown really did get the ball rolling.

Ron Dellums had very ambitious plans regarding downtown development but has offered no plans whatsoever to get it done.

18Montclair, When it gets to the level of development being halted it is because of $$$$. Also, the people who won't be able to afford these new developments will not be able to afford Oakland when the changes come and won't be in favor of new plans that don't include them.

I have no idea what Dellums does.

Well the Ellington for one is an example of this. I can't even afford a decent sized place in there. They are still pretty empty. Who is going to pay 600 K for a 1000 square foot condo. with $800 HOA fees?

I get that. But I think people should also look at the opportunities for increased tax revenue this would have on the whole city. In that sense everyone benefits.

That stated, Im very pro-development when it comes to Oakland.

This is really a national phenom. Its very rare to see high-density development in downtown areas that are moderately priced. Its like they specifically target upper income yuppies and plan everything around them.

I would love to see mid and high rise condo towers with 2-4 bd units priced in the 100s-300s. That would bring many families downtown imo.

Me either.

He gave this very impressive speech and outlined his plans to bring 100,000 new residents to downtown in an ecologically friendly environment(well he said something to that effect) and at prices people can afford.

I thought it was awesome and eagerly awaited further plans--he's come back with nothing on the matter since then.

I even called the Mayor's Office and CEDA to find out if the Mayor has any new proposals regarding his previous announcements and they said no.

Its like he was a Lame Duck from day one. At the worst possible time, when the momentum was in our favor.
