Default housing/living expenses in San Francisco

Right now I am an undergraduate student. I am from South Carolina and have gotten a 6 month internship in San Francisco.
Since its over 2000 miles I don't think I should bring my car and renting is not an option because of low income-and below 25.
So what are some good websites to search for low income housing (are youth hostels applicable?, roomates looking for a room, etc..), also where to find info on public transportation? Also, could I survive off of $20/hr 40hr week?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Buh? Renting is your only option. If you're making $20 an hour fulltime, that's $4000 a month, meaning you'd qualify for an apartment up to $1333. That should be plenty if it's just you, there are lots of studios in the city you can easily afford.

He was talking about renting a car which I don't think he can do since he's under 25.

You don't need a car in San Francisco. Public transit is good in SF and there are trains (BART & Caltrain) to the East Bay and south to San Jose.

Ah right. And though you don't absolutely need a car in SF, if you plan on making decent food for yourself at a reasonable price, you should at least look into City CarShare.

You should be able to do ok on $20 hr. Not luxury living, but livable, especailly if you get a roommate.
