Interestingly both the Bay Meadows project and the Sunnyvale Town Center one have actually resulted in blight.

Destruction in pursuit of utopia.

But that's how that movie always ends.

I don't know if anyone ever went there, but Bay Meadows Race Track was not exactly Elysian Fields. It was a run down race track that hadn't been updated since the 1940's and had all the comforts of a bus station in a bad section of town. Really, a vacant lot is a major upgrade.

Hillsdale: Moving the tracks | San Francisco Examiner (http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/Hillsdale-Moving-the-tracks-96813224.html - broken link)

They'll barely complete Phase 1 (if even that) which are some homes along Saratoga Drive, they will move the station (making it a greater distance from existing homes especially high density areas west of the Mall) and then it will grind to a halt due to the double dip recession, and, the general secular decline of California.

Ah, another utopian project ...

Repeat after me in trance like cadence: Must ... have ... new ... four ... story ... densepack ... TOD ...

Still no real development at the site. They finally cleared most of the rubble though. Developer claims that some infrastructure may go in later this year. We'll see.

I was pretty worried about some of the projects around the Oakland City Center. Luckily a big empty lot looks like things are moving ahead and the nearly finished City Walk is picking up again. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/18/re...land.html?_r=1

Some of this redevelopment is taking way too long.

There have been no significant updates on this project on the relevant sites. If there were to be any serious work at the site it should have started by now, in order to get it done before the return of the rains later in the year.

But it's only vaporware. Lots of concept drawings but nothing built.

Default sad

I can't understand why nothing is happening. Residential real estate is still very expensive in San Mateo, and downtown San Mateo is busy every time I'm there.

It's a sort of no Man's land between the semi nasty hood between the Fair Grounds and Hwy 92, and, the not-as-nice part of the hood between El Camino and 101 south of the Fair Grounds / former Bay Meadows site. In reality that entire area was a more or less salt of the Earth area, the racetrack was a decent fit. A "new town" just does not fit there. The whole thing has been an immense mistake.
