Sooooo ... it turns out that the Bay Meadows Land Company may not start to build the Ecotopian wonderland of "Smart Growth" (aka Agenda21) development in 2010. They are now saying "we may start in 2010 if the economy improves."

For an indication of what may really happen, check out Sunnyvale, where their version of "Smart Growth" ended up with a bankrupt developer. Well at least they got some steel up down there.

At the Bay Meadows site, thus far, it is an urban prairie.

I'm taking bets (for fun only, no money): will it or won't it end up as permanent or semi permanent urban prairie?

Regarding the Sunnyvale fiasco I mentioned in the lead off post, here is a related thread:

What the hell are you talking about? I never heard of something so ludicrous. "Smart Growth?" GTF outta here!

Sunnyvale was developing their downtown area and like many towns in this country got stuck with a developer with financial problems. This unfortunately coincided with the enormous economic problems caused by Bush/Republican incompetence that has affected the entire nation, Sunnyvale included.

I've noticed the same thing here in San Jose. Some developer bought a huge plot of land at the corner of Tully and White, across from Cunningham Park. Then the city rejected their proposal for development - rightly so, because Tully is already one of the most traffic-choked streets in the Bay Area. So now there are cattle grazing on the land. :P

That's nuts to have cattle grazing on urban land. People always whine about traffic. But if they develop further out, then that just creates more traffic in a different place. It doesn't fix the traffic problem at all and makes it worse if it exacerbates sprawl.

If we want to fix the traffic problem, we need convenient mass transit. And you don't get an efficient mass transit system with miles and miles of suburban sprawl that's pockmarked with grazing land in between.

One of the specific, stated goals of both the Sunnyvale and Bay Meadows projects is "Smart / Sustainable Growth" and "Transit Oriented Development" - straight out of the Agenda 21 playbook.

As of this past weekend ... piles of rubble other than one small pile they removed in order to create a photo op of rubble being cleared.

Still taking bets ...

Real estate developers and urban planners have been making stupid decisions since before there even was a United Nations. Frankly I find it hard to believe that the UN has any influence at all on US cities except perhaps within a mile or so of its building in Manhattan.

Lots of eco freaks and urban planners (often one in the same) adore Agenda 21 and use it to craft their "visioning" templates.
