But this is the first time they've left in 20 years.
I think the last El Nino was in 1996.
So it's just the strength of this years El Nino?
More likely its the Negative Phase PDO. That is a huge driver of the North Pacific fishery.

Plus, this El Nino is pretty weak, thus far.

Good question. Also, the El Nino isn't weak just because we're not being effected by it yet. A strong El Nino is determined by how it effects the ocean, not humans lol. Some El Nino's barely have any effect at all. Each one is different.

PDO - Pacific Decadal Oscillation.

Google it.

A cold / negative phase PDO will tend to reduce certain impacts of an El Nino, especially for SoCal where they may escape the heaviest rains. Up here it can be a mixed bag, either lots of (cold) rain or not. It results in colder weather than one would expect for most of the state.

It also has massive impacts on the fishery from here north.

It was discovered by people interested in salmon booms and busts off of Alaska.

The cycle runs about 20 - 30 years, much longer than ENSO.

BTW the most recent El Nino was 2005 - 06. Prior to that I believe it was 02 - 03 and prior to that 97 - 98.

Believe it or not they migrated to Oregon coast according the local news i watched 3 days ago. They said sea lions moved up here because the kind of fish they like to eat.... I was shock they moved few hundred miles up north for food.
Try to google it along with oregon see if you can retrieve the story.

Only males normally migrate that far north. If females are there then that's unusual.

Yes, we know.
There are a couple of links on one of the replies on this thread ... one article is regarding their migration to the Oregon coast and one article is about their migration down to Monterey Bay.
