I am from Austin and miss it, only I don't miss the weather, but atm we are currently in Kansas City Mo. Their BBQ sucks big time, but they love it here, even though it's slathered in a horrible sweet sauce, and too dry and salty. We are currently looking at jobs both in SF and back in Austin. Even at 100k I'm afraid that wouldn't get us anywhere in SF. Even after the bust the real estate is still amazingly high and the commute times depending where your job is located is a huge consideration.
Texas has diverse cities and terrains but it's a far drive between them all. It's a day's commitment to get anywhere different from where you live.
I'm not a big fan of the Salt Lick, it used to be really good, but now it's so crowded they treat you like cattle and herd you into trough-like atmosphere of long tables and count the seconds for you to get your a** out of there for the next herd of cattle. The last time I was there it was too dry and left out too long. Don's BBQ at the corner of hwy 71 and 290 is very good. There are a lot of lil mom and pop BBQ joints that are outstanding. These cloned corporate fast food BBQ intitutions are not to be supported. Same goes with all the corporate food they call food here in Kansas City. That's one reason we are hightailing it outta here.

I'm 25 y/o office worker by day, fine artist by night. I hate texas but I have lived here all my life. I always wanted to move to san fran. I am making under 20k a year in Texas. How can I move to san fran? Anyone from texas moved to cali? What was it like?
Stay in Texas or some other state, The Socialist are screwing this state up badly. They have taken from those of us who earn and given so much to those who do not earn that NOW the state is very broke. They have sent the police out with radar guns ticketing the commuters while trying to get to work. Speeding at commute time has never been an issue because the flow of traffic made it safe for all to go the same speed, NOW they are out there with The Governor's insistence passing out fund raising tickets.....

Making under 20k in Texas and U want to move to SF!?
Dallas and Houston currently have the #1 and # 2 job markets in The US right now. You should just stay in Texas and choose a better career!
Based on my experiences. Cali has mountains, water, snow, and sunshine. More culture and diversity. People seem more laid back there.
Texas is big, flat and boring. Living next to Baylor, the biggest Christian private school, is like living in conservative religious hell. Everything is based on the good ol' boys club. It's like George Bush's back yard.
Dude U are living In WACO! Move to Houston or Dallas
Where did you get that idea about drunk drivers? Texas does not have a serious problem with drunk driving, anymore than areas in California..The problem with driving in Texas is two fold, one they drive very fast and 2-so many people from Texas are not natives so they all drive in little differently.
Nita
I see your point, Nita. But recently channel 2\ KCBS did a series of news segments devoted to the use of marijuana in Los Angeles. The number of people who must be driving while under the influence of marijuana has to be very high here yet how many people are arrested for being under the influence of marijuana. That was my only point.

but what does have to do with Texas and drunk drivers? NM, maybe, but Texas is no better or worse than many states?

It is always funny (at least a bit) how BBQ differs. I think the main styles are Texas (brisket, dry rubbed, usually cooked without sauce but the sauce is tomato/spicy), KC (thick sweet sauce on pork or beef), and Memphis (pork baby back ribs, dry rub, thin sauce).
The Salt Lick is an institution, but has grown way too big for fans of the original. I just don't care to drive all the way there and share the space with hundreds of others.
Is this a joke or what? You make 20k a year want to move to San Fransisco and be able to live comfortably? I'm a 54 year old woman who lives in New Jersey with a husband and we make 117k a year pay 8k a year in property taxes and we can't wait to move to Texas. It is probably one of the nicest areas we have looked at to retire. It wasn't hit by the housing bubble like the rest of the country because of their very strigent mortgage guide lines. The tax rate is way better than what we pay here and you have as much or more culture than California. When you grow up and start acting like a real citizen and realize it ain't all about finding yourself, get a real job and stop whining you will realize that California or San Fransisco is not right for you. Oh and by the way do you still live at home with Mom and Dad?
