Whether its NYC or SF, most of the "real" gangsters are now in the burbs, The current generation of inner city tough guys are actually scared impressionable kids with guns(who are really just "grunts" for real gangsters), or losers who think its cool to go to jail. You wanna find old school NYC tough-guys? go to north Jersey? you wanna find SF tough guys? go to the East bay. Core cities are becoming more like living museums, fossilized for yuppie youngsters who grew up in the burbs to see how the majority of people used to live.

Real toughguys are smart; they run unions, small businesses, and cheap realestate, and most importantly a tough guy is not tough because of where he's from, but who he is, and everyplace has gottem not just NYC. I consider peopl soft and hard, not places, because soft and hard people live everywhere, and to assume an entire city or region is soft shows a level of ignorance suitable only for someone who has been nowhere or done nothin their entire life.

Unstable bums who live off the grid don't count as "hard".

They're just stupid.

Don't get armed bums mixed up with real stone cold gangsters, a real gangster would never admit to being one, because they know its not something to be proud of. Real gangsters make alot of money, and don't like to be taxed anymore than anybody else, so while most of them continue to do "business" in the city, most of them keep their families and private lives in the suburbs, or at least nice city neighborhoods.

Thier is nothing glamorous or tough about living in a state of perpetual poverty, and if its your own fault that your poor (and this is the case with most adults in the ghetto) than its pathetic and downright embarassing.

Once you reach a certain socio-economic status you have to leave the bums and the hoods they inhabit alone before a crab in the barrel pulls you back down, because poor people can smell money from a mile away.

I've never been to Hunter's point, but you'd be surprised how similar inner city ghettos are across the country. Just like some people say all suburbs are the same with soccer moms and strip malls etc., so to are most inner city ghettos the same, except they consist of welfare queens and their drug dealer boyfriend(s) instead of soccer moms and Wal-Marts.
