[quote=NorCal Dude;18802758]Perception is a matter of reality. The citys biggest events are the gay parade and love fest. Compare that to other cities where the biggest parade is st patties where a bunch of blue collar irish drunks fight each other for no reason.

Perception is that you are tough. But the reality is that deep down, you are gay and r too tough to admit it. It's okay dude. I know you aspire to someday be the guy waving the rainbow flag in the front of the parade.

It's only at work where I saw the ultra-sensitive touchy people. Like if you throw away a piece of paper instead of recycling, you get called out. You also have to be careful about any comment that can be construed as racist, sexist or homophobic. Don't ever call a woman a "girl"... ie, "I once dated this girl, blah blah...." is wrong. That should read "I once dated this *woman*..."

Silicon Valley is part of the Bay Area-its not a matter of opinion
It may be part of the Bay Area, but almost worlds apart culturally. Its funny how East and North Bay folks are claiming Silicon Valley when they are almost opposites in many ways. SV is full of libertarians, independants and entrepreneurs. I would'nt describe it as hard-left as places like San Francisco or Oakland. I also noticed SV culture has more respect for the military.

You're just picking all the negatives to support your argument and seperating the positives. This forum is about people in the Bay Area. and SV is in the Bay Area.

The "South Bay" is not always included into definitions of the Bay Area. I'm just saying I can see why. Its different.

We're dealing with a girl (that's right, a girl) at work whose lawyer sent us a nasty letter because she feels discriminated against.

The reason?

One of the guys on staff - not a manager, not an owner, just a guy in a lateral position - made some comments about how he didn't like outsourcing, and thought that thin women were attractive. She's a thin woman of Indian descent. She feels that she is working in a "culutre of discrimination" and thus, she's of the opinion that we owe her about ten times what she makes in a year.

Not that it'll go anywhere, but still... ugh.

As a person living on the East Coast from Chicago looking to move to San Francisco, try living on your East Coast with a live and let live attitude, which some nosy person over hears and attempts to correct you - RUDELY.

"Sarcasm" seems to be lost on most people here. They all look at me with blank stares when I make a sarcastic joke or comment."

I would say this mostly about the East Coast. Maybe it's my Chicagoan style of sarcasm...but I don't think you guys take it too well over hear.

"Say "thats gay" your called out as a homophobe."

That there would be because it is homophobic.

"People give you stares of disapproval if your the type of person that looks like to have somewhere to go, commitments to make, likes to dress up for business etc."

On the East Coast you get rude stares if you're not dressed to the nines. People dress up on Saturdays here!

"Just no sense of working to "get ahead". What gives? Do people here just prefer others to be as miserable, non-goal oriented, aim-less and broke as they are?"

Some people don't need a BMW, a huge house, and 100K or more salary to feel successful. And, the East Coast People are very intolerant of the average working guy/gal that is happy with a happy family.

"Overall the people in this area seem to lack alot of aspects of character and tend to be very introverted and quiet."

Define character. Could you mean materialistic?

"I also see theres less of an energy here. Everything from major stores to mom and pop shops to restaurants closes early and people don't seem to care. Even nightclubs close early (WTF?)."

Maybe they know how to relax without getting drunk in clubs till 3:00am and burning the midnight oil only to rise hung over, jolt up with Starbucks and become annoyingly over caffeinated, get to work and get nit picky with fellow colleagues, stab them in the back to get ahead, go to the bar drink five more martinis and jump on the daily regular who comes in for a beer for being an alcoholic - I bar tend sweetie I know your type. The humble regular drinks less and tips better.

"Anyways I was just venting. Personally I think the weather is great here, but I like the east coast better in terms of the relationships, people and the overall attitude of most people."

What relationships do people have unless you can do something for them on the east coast?

"I just gel well with folks who are more honest about themselves and know how to stick up for themselves without complaining or crying. Those types are usually laughed out of New York City. Its very soft."

Well, I am just being honest myself and sticking up for San Francisco people who have been very nice and pleasant on this board. But that's a Chicagoan. Kind of like our President!!! Hmmmmm. I wonder where he got that from?

"How can people live like this day and day out and not go crazy?"

Don't. Go back east and make room for me.

In other words, this region is diverse--I dont understand this idea that they are worlds apart when every city and metro area has varying cultures???

Really, which Bay are they are part of?

This has nothing to do with politics but its a matter of simple geography.
