I made a thread like this before because I was considering applying for a college in San Francisco. Now I'm sure this is the one I want to attend, so I'll be there in the fall. I've heard a lot of good things about it, so just tell me the negatives so I can be prepared when I come. Do not include these things as I already know about them:

High real estate
Homeless people (I will have a car, so I won't be walking much.)
Diversity (Not an actual negative. I just pointed this out because some people, even though they live in probably America's most liberal area, they are still very prejudiced. I have heard natives talk about gay people and other groups. I love diversity and have nothing against gays, so it doesn't bother me.)

Now, could you natives be kind enough to tell me what I don't know?

1. Its kinda expensive
2. The homeless run amock. As a result there's litter and a stench of urine in some places.
3. The meter maids and tow trucks in The City are ruthless
4. City government is highly balkanized, inefficient and they dont work together
5. Some people are so caught up in being tolerant that they become intolerant
6. The newspaper is extremely underwhelming considering what a smart place this is
7. The buses have a schedule, but they dont always follow them
8. Some people dress like they just woke up and left without washing up
9. Sometimes they compete over who's the most cosmopolitan or whose weirder
10. Despite our best efforts to appear carefree, San Francisco is extremely money oriented and very workaholic

You broke the rules, Montclair...

I'm not sure I can come up with 10, but here are my negatives:

1. Traffic, traffic, traffic & obnoxious drivers... can that count as 3?
2. Bad public transportation, at least compared to some cities
3. Not enough late-night food options (once again, for a big city)
4. No and/or expensive parking, which won't be an issue if you don't have a car
5. Lack of dog-friendly housing - also might not be a problem for you
6. Flakiness... so many people are here today & gone tomorrow, or they simply can't commit day-to-day
7. Boring weather - yes, it's GREAT, but I crave a good snowstorm sometimes (even though it would wreak havoc on our hilly roads!!)
8. People can be snooty about their neighborhoods... think they're the shiznit just because they live in SoMa or Mission.
9. Uhhhhh, I think that's all I can come up with!

Amen to that... I have bad knees, and these hills KILL me sometimes. Luckily my neighborhood is flat, or I'd never walk anywhere! But the hills do look pretty, don't they?

I'm young (17) and I stay in shape, so the hills won't be a problem. I will have a car though, so it looks like I'll be dealing with the traffic. Why are you hoping for snow? I hate the snow. I want to get away from it. It's all through the Midwest and I've had to deal with it every winter.

All costs are higher -- food is higher, car insurance is higher.
Can't leave anything in your car, or it'll be "smash and grab" so not only will it be missing you'll have to replace the broken window.
Lots of petty thefts.
Dress in layers because you'll be cold one minute and too hot the next.
A lot of ambient noise. You're surrounded by it... sometimes it gets to me.

I just thought of another question. From what I've heard the parking is bad. Are there a lot of garages around you can park in? Do they have a time limit?
