I have a serious craving for clam chowder. I like it New England, thick, and full of big clams. Who has the best chowda?

some chowdeuuu monsieur?

It's chowda! Say it! Chowda!

Chowdeuuuu.

CHOWDA!

(i'm not the only Simpsons fan am i? ) For a real answer, the last clam chowder i had that i can remember well was from Boudin on fisherman's wharf. Pretty good, and it comes in a bread bowl, but i'm sure there's plenty better out there. I'm not much of a clam chowder connoisseur.

OMG- I had the best clam chowder at a place in Berkeley called "Sea Salt" on San Pablo Ave. It was to die for and now I'm getting a serious craving for it at 8:30 am.. Sea Salt, 2512 San Pablo Ave. Berkeley, CA 94702

I was so bummed out. I lived in Boston, the land of Chowda, but I'm lactose intolerant. It's just wasn't fair. The lobsta was great though!

If you like the thicker type I'd highly recommend Scott's Seafood Restaurant in Palo Alto or Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay.

And if you go to Sam's you should definitely try the Maine Lobster Roll. Its like $20 but it was voted one of the top 5 best sandwiches in America by the Today Show. They also have a "Chowder Mobile" that comes to SF and Brisbane on certain days of the week during lunch hour. You should check it out! (Man now I think I might have to trek down there and get some lol.)

Sam's Chowder House - Authentic New England style seafood.

Welcome to Sam's ChowderMobile

We left around 10 so we didn't see everyone's response. We decided on Spengers because we hadn't been there in quite a long time, something like 10 years, and it was a place we both remembered fondly going to with our parents. Oh wow, it wasn't good. The chowder was thick and creamy and smelled good, but there were 0 clams, I mean I didn't even detect a hint. No scraps, no slivers, nothing. Canned Campbell's soup has more clam. I think there was only like 20 small pieces of potato in the bowl. I'm almost positive the rest of our lunch arrived frozen in a box before the chef nuked it. So disappointing on all accounts. Grrrr

Sorry to hear that. Spenger's used to be pretty good but it's been about 30 years since I've been there. I think they got bought by McCormick and Schmicks which shouldn't have changed it for the worse but apparently it has.
