I am considering relocating to the San Francisco area in the spring from Chicago. I need advice on good areas to initially rent. Also interested in any other constructive advice or tips on experiencing a successful relocation. Also I work in the healthcare field in Occupational Therapy and would appreciate info on area hospitals, home health agencies, and nursing facilities that are good employers

Where are you going to work? The San Francisco "area" is large. I see you posted the same thing on the San Jose forum. Can you narrow it down?

I have connections with several "head hunter" agencies that could place me pretty much anywhere I find desirable in California. I am generally posting on most areas in California to get a good feel of the pros and cons of each area, however San Francisco and surrounding area has special appeal to me after spending several months there in spring of "08"

Will you have a job when you move here, or are you expecting to find one after you move? There is a lot of good info already posted here that might answer your questions. Try searching for the words "move" or "moving".

I lived in Chicago for 8 years and Mountain View (30 miles south of SF) for about 12 years. I like California, but I still prefer Chicago over San Francisco. I would say that I'd pick living in a suburb of San Francisco over living in a suburb of Chicago. Traffic in Chicago is worse now than in the Bay area. I used to go to San Francisco only once or twice a month. It's never been one of my favorite cities but a lot of people like it.

Thanks thus far for the responses, they've been helpful. I actually spent 3 months (Dec 2007- March 2008) working a temp position in Calistoga and living in Santa Rosa and I did enjoy it. I have active licenses in IL., NV, and CA currently as well as considering OR. The overall cost of living is lower in NV (absence of state tax helps as well). I lived in Las Vegas for 18 months and although I love the climate there, not much else about the city is appealing to me. A 3 month stay in Reno was much better. No. California is also a draw with the ocean and overall beauty however I realize cost of living is much higher and So. California not really for me (except possibly San Diego). In todays economy and difficult job climate I feel fortunate to have such flexibility due to demand in my field. I have a few months to decide all pros and cons, needing to make a decision by early May if I decide to take an initial 13 week assignment with one of several "travel companies" that have offered assignments. Again, thanks for the imput and appreciate any additional thoughts tou may have.
