It's kind of crazy what has been going on Bay Area public transportation in the past few months, which has made headlines around the country and around the world due to YouTube. However, what is special about the Bay Area now is that much of these altercations between passengers have been recorded and put on the internet.

This could happen anywhere in the country, but its a wonder why the fights in the Bay Area gain such notoriety? I stopped riding AC Transit when I got my car up here, and I haven't had that much experience with Muni, but I've always had crazy experiences on public transportation.

I guess that's the other side of being tech savy. Thoughts?

While the public transit is good up there, I think it's always been a bit crazy. When I was growing up, shootings on AC Transit were not unheard of. Those bullet proof plastic shields behind the drivers are a direct result of that. I remember in the late 80's there was a driver shot at point blank range on the AC Transit line 40, the 40 ran from downtown Berkeley to San Leandro through some of the roughest parts of Oakland, down foothill blvd. all the way through the numbered avenues.

Violence on Bay Area public transit, especially AC Transit and Muni is not a new thing really and has made news for a long time. At least now they have downgraded to beating each other up instead of shooting the drivers, or others.

BTW it turns out that the epic beard man stood up to a murderer who broke his parole, now he will be going back to prison for 10+ years.

Oh god I hope that's a rare occurrence? Since I am going to be moving to Oakland later this year. And will likely be riding on those buses. This is scary.

You'll be ok. These things happen but it's not like a regular occurrence that you can count on. Public transportation can have it's issues in most cities. In San Diego, people have been stabbed at trolley stations and SD is relatively safe.

Muni is awesome.

To the OP, I think you pretty much got it figured out. A lot of people in the Bay Area are web savvy and carry "fancy gadgets." They see stuff, they shoot it and they share it.

The Chinatown Muni fight was pretty awesome. The lady was trying to be a ***** and got served (and jumpkicked). That one actually ended up kind of bringing communities together in the name of cultural harmony.

I think the addition of tech gadgets is really the issue.
There are looney tunes all over the country, riding all kinds of public transit.
It's akin to thinking everyone has cancer, now that ways to detect it are so advanced.
It's all always been there, it's just more easily documented nowadays.

At least it's just knuckle fights, etc nowadays....instead of say, pot shots being taken at tourists from the roof of the projects at fisherman's wharf. Remember that?
