Hi everyone,

I've accepted a job as a nurse in San Quentin and deciding between living in SF and San Rafael. I will be renting a room in either city, and looking through Craigslist the room rents are about the same.

I've always loved San Francisco because it offers lots to do, shopping and night life and I would like to live there, but I'm wondering if it would be better to live in SR since it's closer. What's it like for young adults there?

I've budgeted out what it would cost to live in either city, and SR is cheaper by around $250-$300 because of the tolls and gas it would take to commute to San Quentin from San Francisco. I'm just worried that it will be really boring for me to live in SR compared to SF. With my wage I can definitely live in either city with lots of disposable income so I'm weighing if that extra $300 is worth it.

Any advice? Thanks!

The good thing is that you would be going against the commute so traffic going north from SF to San Quentin wouldn't be so bad. I personally like San Rafael, it is a cool place with a fairly good downtown and a great farmer's market on thursdays. If you live in SR the good thing is that it is a little bit cheaper and you would be close enough to SF for fun and nightlife, although there are some pretty good bars in SR in which to have a good time.

San Francisco is a MUCH MUCH more interesting place to live, especially for someone in their 20's. Is it worth the extra $$ and commute time to live there? It would be for me. But only you can know if its worth it to you.

San Rafael is really nice. Also San Amselmo & Fairfax. Quiet and warm weather, these towns have lots of trees and a lay-back lifestyle.
