Default Considering a Vacation in California

This summer, I want to go out and experience another part of the country. Among the locations I am pondering, California is high on the list, specifically San Francisco. However, I do not have much money, so I would most assuredly have to camp in a hammock with a tarp overhead while I am there. Anyone have any advice for a backpacker willing to rough it to enjoy the likes of California?

Seriously? Come on, we've got enough homeless people already. Get a job.

How is this remotely relevant? It is a vacation.

I can't think of the name of it but there is a youth hostel in the Fort Mason that's quite popular (or used to be, anyway).

Are you willing to stay in a very basic no-frills but cheap hotel? There's the Spaulding Hotel downtown San Francisco. It provides weekly rates and may be affordable for you.

Outdoor camping anywhere in SF does not sound safe to me. There are SO many homeless people there who probably have all the nooks and crannies figured out and you could become a victim. I don't recommend it.

You should also check into the California State Park website to see if there is a nearby campsite or two that includes sections for hikers.

Thank you for the reply, but a hotel is just out of the budget.

I do not plan on camping inside of San Francisco. That would be asking for it!

And thanks! Will do.

edit: I might camp a few days out of the week and stay at a hostel the remaining nights. Could be a good time! Thanks again, Bluesmama.
