Go for Oakland. Ignore people who will tell you it is all sketchy and dangerous. Not true, there are plenty of safe neighborhoods. It is also really diverse and there is lots to do. And another important note, in the Middle Class+ areas of town, diversity means mixed groups of people socializing, not diverse types of homogenous groups in one place. Also people are pretty friendly, so you can definitely make friends in bars etc. DM if you do move here, we're the same age/status we can go out together.

You could live in some pretty nice spots for that cash. S.F's Richmond would be my choice.

Agree with BayDude, for the money you have, you can do much better than Oakland.

id' rather live in union city than walnut creek
it's a nice suburb, but there aren't many bars or places like that. u can always drive to the surrounding cities for that though. theres a target and a bunch of restaurants in uc, but no place to even consider a dating 'scene' unless you're 16 and wana make out with someone at the movie theaters.

I would say: Fremont (diverse without Union City's problems, and more affordable than Berkeley/Oakland), Berkeley, North Oakland, El Cerrito, possibly Emeryville. All but Emeryville are near a BART station.

Where are "the hills" of Oakland (as in between which roads)? Is that a neighborhood or just a description of the geographical location? Thanks.

Parts of Oakland are horrible and parts are gorgeous. It's a big city that is hard to generalize about.

Please refer to the various Oakland threads for advice on where to live. All parts of the city, including the "white" parts, are welcoming to minorities.

I'd pick union city. Close to the bridge if you want to cut across the bay to palo alto or half moon bay. Most areas of union city are pretty decent. Lots of good cheap chinese restaurants, especially. The hills along mission blvd have a relaxing feel. I'm a software engineer working in SF financial district. The BART commute is pretty good. 40-45 minutes and you can read or sleep or do work on the ride.
