I just moved to SF from southern CA last September. I live in North Beach and work near the new ballpark (south embarcadero). While I enjoy the perks of living in the city, love the North Beach neighborhood, and love living close to work, the SF weather really has me down. I really miss the mild and sunny weather. I can deal with rain and fog in the winter. But what really has me depressed is going into spring/summer with no hopes of seeing 75+ degree weather.

I know if I move east or south I might be in more luck. But I really don't want to live in suburbia. Does anyone have an advice on other parts of the bay that might be better weather wise without having to sacrifice too many perks of the city? What are places like Walnut Creek, nice parts of Oakland (although personally, I have yet to see any), or South the Bay/Peninsula like? I am a single renter in my upper 20s. A nice and safe neighborhood without a horrendus commute is desired.

I used to live in Lake Merritt and found the weather to be slightly better than that in the city. The lake is nice to do some jogging around and it's close to places in downtown Oakland. I feel like it's one of the nicer parts of Oakland but isn't without some crime (e.g. car break-ins). I used to be able to walk to the Lake Merritt BART and it's a quick trip from there to downtown.

I don't know much about Walnut Creek but have a few friends who live there. I've heard of "clubs" and bars there but not really sure if it's much of a night life. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

Generally, I believe that the weather the more east you get in the Bay Area. Parts of the peninsula can be pretty foggy, which I'm sure doesn't help. Regardless of where you pick, it seems like there will be trade-offs. It's hard to find a nice, warm, safe, non-suburb place with a decent commute.

Good luck!

Well that's the trade off to living in the best city in the world! Sure, SF has it's rain, fog, and wind, but understand that some parts of SF are actually very sunny. Like in the Mission, it's always a sunny day. This is because of its geographical location. But downtown SF and Russian Hill, Marina, and North Beach, and any other part of SF that is on a hill or on the Bay is going to experience that kind of climate. For me, I love SF so much that the weather does not bother me. Remember what Mark Twain said?- "The coldest winter I ever had was a summer in San Francisco." I've been in SF in January where it was 70 degrees and sunny. But down by the Bay is so cool because of the breezes. The thing of about SF is that it never gets too hot or too cold.

The nicer parts of Oakland IMO have the best weather anywhere in the nation! It's certainly warmer than SF. I personally don't like heat myself but I can see how SF can seem a bit too cool for most people. Oakland frequently sees temps in the mid 70's a good part of the summer although it is the Bay Area so there are cool spells still.

Best city according to whom and on what basis? In terms of economic, political and cultural influence SF is not even among the top 10 in US let alone the world. SF is mid sized tourist town with lots of rich people and bad weather and thats about it.

To the OP, you may enjoy somewhere like San Mateo, San Carlos or Redwood City. Each have their own distinct downtown, better weather, 15-20 min to the beach and a short train ride into the City.

I lived in SoCal recently and thought the weather was too bland, but I can understand that a midpoint might be a better transition for you.

My only suggestion to you is to read or travel if you can afford it. By any stretch of imagination SF is not even among the top 20 global cities. US cities like NYC,Chicago,LA, Miami, DC etc are far more significant and recognizable than SF.

Global city - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The only thing that SF would be #1 is the irrational sense of supremacy (almost laughable) of its not too educated residents!
