I never had Cioppino. I had to google it to figure out what it was. Can any of you guys recommend a place where I can try it next time I'm in San Francisco?

To the OP: Sourdough Bread and Chinese-American food come to mind for me, especially Chop Suey.

I always think of sourdough bread, but I've had better sourdough outside of San Francisco that in San Francisco.

I don't know if it's a food that SF's famous for, but it was famous with me--and I sure do miss Asian Fusion cuisine with that special California twist of using the freshest product...

And I also miss fresh-caught from the cold Pacific salmon just-off-the-boat...once went salmon fishing and caught one of my own..heaven...my favorite meal...

I wrote a story about that fishing excursion (Woman Meets Salmon). It won the prize as my most widely rejected story ever...but the eating was fine.

Sourdough, cioppino, hangtown fry, green goddess dressing, chicken tettrazzini, celery victor, crab louis, mai tais, martinis, irish coffee. Those are the classics. But for me, San Francisco will always be the home of the super burrito.

San Francisco isn't really noted for one particular food other than maybe the sourdough bread, but it's famous for its own brand of Fusion Cuisine, which has a lot to do with lighter, fresher foods, lots of organic veggies that are cooked lightly or kept raw, fish, lots of avocado, less fat and salt ..... these things are fused with more traditional ethnic Mexican and Asian cuisines to make very unique dishes.

It's almost always healthier, but sometimes too healthy to be optimal in flavor - for example California pizzas just don't taste as good as East Coast pizzas. But SF rules when it comes to great salads, burritos, vegetarian dishes, and seafood.

San Francisco is know for its world famous SF Burriots or Mission style(Mission District) burriots.
I cant belive no one has posted that yet. Does anyone here still live in SF? Here is a link to more inofrmation on the world famous San Francisco Mission style Burrito. And dont forget the chips and salsa!!
You cant get a SF burrito in most Taquerias in Northern California and also a few in Southern California but no place does it as good as San Fran's Mission District.

SF is also world famous for it's sourdough breads, and local fresh Dungenous Crab.
