My husband may have a job offer in Palo Alto. We are still debating making the move from the East Coast. . . We have two young kids and need a 4 bedroom house. We have a house here that we may be able to sell for $1.1-$1.2 million and could afford a house in that range. My guess is no such thing is possible in Palo Alto, or am I wrong? Is SF too far of a commute? We want to be an area that is walkable -- even if suburbs, walkable to a town center, etc. And then there's the public school issue--if the public schools are great we might be able to spend a bit more on a house -- $1.3 million or so. If they are lousy, then we have to spend less. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

Check out San Carlos, about 7 or 8 miles from Palo Alto. The White Oaks school district is very good and housing prices are a little cheaper than what you would find in Palo Alto. Housing in Palo Alto is EXPENSIVE. I haven't seen anything in a long time that is going for less than $1 mil. Also check out Redwood City (the west side of town) and Belmont. From Palo Alto, it takes about 40 min. to get to San Francisco, assuming the traffic isn't too bad. There is also a commuter train (Caltrain) between Palo Alto and SF.

San Carlos is a nice place, but you should also consider San Mateo (certain parts), Foster City and Burlingame. My family moved from Maryland to San Mateo when I was almost 7, and none of us have regretted it! We're all TOTALLY Bay Area-ites (?) now, and can't imagine ever going back east - no offense, lol. We lived in the neighborhood called San Mateo Park, which borders Hillsborough and Burlingame... it might be a tad above your price range, so you should also look in San Mateo Hills (near Alameda de las Pulgas and 25th-42nd Ave., approx). This is a safe, quiet, convenient & family-friendly town, and I'm glad my parents chose to have us grow up there.

Oh, and regarding Palo Alto... you possibly could find something in your price range there (how sad that $1 million is considered "average" ), and in nearby Menlo Park. But the commute would be a long & slow one, which I know because I did it for a while. I was living in East Palo Alto and commuting to southeast San Francisco, and even getting to the edge of the city took 45-55 minutes. It was too much for me, so I ended up moving to SF... only have a 5 minute commute now, and I'm loving it!!
