Hey San Francisco folks. I was cruising around on Street View and found this stretch of elevated road that seems to be missing a purpose.

Can anybody tell me what this was for and why they haven't bothered to remove it? Thanks.

That looks like part of the old Embarcadero Freeway that used to run right along the waterfront.

Thank goodness that thing is gone...

Wow, wonderful shots. The embarcadero & Ferry building are a huge asset to the city.

According to your map, I think that's part of the freeway retrofitting that's going on right how of the Bay Bridge. It's at Fremont Street and Folsom.

It may not be down by now -- but it should be down soon. I think it comes out or came out by where they want to build the new Transbay Terminal.

Yep. I think 18Montclair is right. Leftover 480 from pre 89 Loma Prieta.

It is not part of the Bay Bridge retrofitting, it's been there doing nothing since 89, although they may be using the elevated area for materials storage....

It kind of looks like the old ramp from I-80 westbound to I-480 is on the other side.. now it's the Harrison/Embarcadero exit..

fremont st, san francisco, ca - Google Maps

I think the structure in the OP might be just a new build for the upcoming Transbay Terminal. But I wasn't around then to know what 480's route was.

I know everyone disagrees with me but I liked the old Embarcadero Freeway. I could cross the bridge and be on Broadway in Chinatown in minutes. But then again, I lived on the sunny side of the Bay and didn't have to look at it.

That thing was horrible. I'm glad they got rid of it. Also, I'm glad it happened by the cities own accord and not mother nature's.

Wasn't the freeway along the Embarcadero torn down after the 1989 earthquake?
