Over here in the Belle Haven / EPA hood, there is definitely an increased police presence today.

At my work place, we're on watch and may decide to send people home if things start looking serious.

With Oakland's reputation for violence and an underfunded police department, they should just call the National Guard and declare a Federal Emergency. This could get ugly if Meserhle gets a light sentence or is found innocent.

Joke now but if a bum verdict gets through, Oakland will be in flames.

I landed in Oakland last night-decided to bring my parents home cause its hot as hell Back East-just terrible-the weather here is absolute heaven by comparison. Anyway I don't sense the sort of nervousness I was expecting to find at all. People seem to be going about their everyday lives totally uninterrupted by the fear of what could happen.

That's very reassuring to me.

At the same time, I agree that we must take precautions. Last time there was the Oscar Grant riots, I remember seeing a bunch of Palestinian flags and banners for other issues-it was ridiculous how these Anarchists try to latch themselves onto this issue.

You also have to watch out for the looters. I can foresee a lot of honest businesses being destroyed by dishonest Oakland hoodies who think they can come in and steal everything not nailed down and use the "verdict" as an excuse to help themselves to a free shopping spree.

It happened in 2002 when the Raiders lost the Superbowl on a small scale. This has the potential to blow up big with this trial.

What is considered a "Bum Verdict"?

The only one that matters, which is the one that will cause Oakland thugs to riot and loot.

Not sure if you watched the entire trial or not...me personally, I only know what the articles online say and was not there.

I have no idea of the Defendant is Guilty or Not Guilty, but assuming by law the Defendant is found Not Guilty and by the letter of the law, that was the correct verdict....I am not saying it is, just throwing it out there, should the jury still come back with a Guilty Verdict for the possibility that the town may riot? Basically, turn a blind eye to justice for the sake of that?

I am not saying the defendant is anything other than he is a defendant in the court system at this point and is innocent until proven beyond a reasonsable doubt. Just curious after seeing the post before.

That's an interesting point, but unfortunately, I'm not a lawyer, or someone who is interested in debating the application of criminal law.

What I do know is that rioters or looters don't adhere to any logic besides chaos, and destruction.
