That is pretty substantial for Oakland.

Kudos!

Here are some more links. Apparently Norwegian Airlines will be using Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

I thought I recently read somewhere that OAK was looking to attract Asia flights, so this is awesome news.

I would also like very much for OAK to land Virgin Australia flights from Sydney.

I just want more domestic service. Like non-red eyes to the east coast.

I usually would make a separate thread for something this big but figured this time, it would be better here.

I'm somewhat baffled by the lack of gentrification I see in large areas of Oakland. I imagine the pressure from commuters would be intense. Perhaps it's simply my experience with Houston's absolute lack of zoning and EIR/CEQA-type controls, but with the lax land use controls here neighborhoods can convert from bungalows to 3 story townhouses and apartment blocks in a couple blinks.

Edit: I'm not making a value judgement in either direction; I'm just curious about the underlying differences. I know many parts of Oakland have very complicated and unique histories. I'm interested in land use patterns, history of cities, and development in general, and looking forward to learning about all the conflicting and counterbalancing forces at work in the Bay Area.

Edit 2: I imagine it also has much to do with differences in tenants rights.

It's actually not that difficult to figure out. The areas of Oakland that are rapidly gentrifying have easy access to BART and a pre-existing infrastructure to sell the idea of it being a walkable, urban neighborhood. East Oakland isn't going to gentrify like Uptown or JLS anytime soon, because it's mostly residential and it doesn't cater to yuppies who want to walk everywhere and have a coffee shop, bookstore, and bar on every corner. West Oakland is taking a while to gentrify because it's mostly just blocks and blocks of houses, although the proximity to Uptown, SF, and 3 BART stations has made it desirable for people getting priced out of SF.

Basically!

BRT on International is going to be a game changer.

Glad to hear this is still in the works, and I hope it spurs more development in the area. A lot of those car dealerships could make a great Apple store or Restoration Hardware.
