Stockton worse than Bakersfield? I don't think so.

From what I remember there are a lot of really good thrift stores in Stockton, especially around Wilson Way and Charter. There are also a ton of really good taco trucks. There are a lot of Hispanics in Stockton as it is located in the bread basket of California. It is really nice around UOP with safe, leafy green neighborhoods and beautiful homes built in the 30's-40's. On the South side there are many people walking pit bulls with neck tattoos. It gets really hot there in the summer and can get up to 112 degrees. In the winter it can get below freezing. It is located near San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and to a certain extent, Yosemite. They have a port in Stockton and giant container ships navigate all the way up the Delta to get there. Stockton has always been a very inexpensive place to live, especially now. A river runs through it. The band Pavement is from Stockton.

Just an FYI, the Port of Stockton does not host "giant container ships". Most of the business the port gets is from what is called "break bulk" cargo. The biggest exports from Stockton are sulphur and bagged rice.

It very rarely gets below freezing in the winter and it's also rare to see a temperature above 105 in the summer (it does happen).

To me this is giant but I suppose that "giant" is not an absolute term.

That was in Stockton?? I lived there for 3 years, and admittedly didn't spend much time near the water... but that looks really big for the ports!

Stockton is not worse than East LA,Montebello,Compton. You cant even drive around those cities in LA,unless your looking for drama.

Modesto is pretty much like anywhere USA. It has its share of problems such as crime, air quality issues and sprawl. That being said, Modesto is not a bad place to be. The North side of Modesto is generally safe and has a low crime rate and decent schools. The South and West sides of Modesto have lots of crime with auto theft and methamphetamine abuse being serious issues. A lot of people who live in North Modesto never go to the South or West sides. Modesto has somewhat of a bad reputation, being the home of Laci Peterson and Chandra Levy. Also, the Yosemite killer tied his crimes to Modesto when he dropped the wallet of one of his victims on a Modesto sidewalk in an attempt to sidetrack police. Modesto's poor reputation is undeserved however and the town has plenty of good things about it. Jobs are not hard to find in Modesto as there are many businesses located there including the largest winery in the world, Gallo. Geographically, Modesto is not very interesting but it is located an hour and a half from San Francisco, two and a half hours from Yosemite and two and a half hours from Lake Tahoe. It is also very close to the Gold Rush country which is one of the most amazing regions of California. There are at least three or four reservoirs located on the outskirts of Modesto where people go boating, camping and fishing. There is a top notch golf course in North Modesto at the Del Rio Country club. There are million dollar homes in the neighborhood surrounding Del Rio and this is where many of Modesto's business elite live and where film maker George Lucas grew up. All of Modesto is surrounded by orchards with the exception of the South Side which is connected to Ceres, CA. They are primarily almond, peach, walnut trees and grape vineyards. The downtown area of Modesto has its share of crime but has improved a lot recently with the addition of an arts center and cineplex. The Modesto symphony orchestra is not too bad and there is an active theatre group there. There is also a minor league baseball team in Modesto called the Modesto Nuts. The now defunct band Grandaddy is from Modesto.
