Tiburon vs Downtown maybe Pacific Heights (San Francisco, Marina: house, neighborhood, private schools)

I am seriously considering a move to San Francisco with my family. I work from home so there will be no commute involved. House budget isn't too much of a concern as I checked already and can afford something in both places. What I am most concerned about is the neighborhood feel for the children when they get older. What the experience of living in these places might be like. I am am an American currently living a crowded Asian city with lots of parks (oxmoron?) and we take the kids there all of the time and along with us to places in the city, restaurants, coffeeshops, strolls along the avenues. We like this kind of lifestyle, but I can sacrifice for whats best for my children when they get older.

Anyway, I will go with my family to San Francisco in October to evaluate potential places to live. I should know more then.

Anyway, if money is no object what wold be the best place to live in the San Francisco area if you had children? Right now one is 6 months and one is 3 years. Both are boys and we should be staying put int he same place for at least 7 years as competitive Private School matriculation is easiest only at the K, 7 or 9th grade years. I suppose I also am interested in Private School information. Perhaps I will start another thread about this.

Since money is no object for you, check out Pacific Heights or the Marina districts in San Francisco. As for private schools, check out "Town School for Boys"- in Pacific Heights. It'll probably get your 3 yr old or 6 month old into Stanford or Harvard with no problem when that day arrives. My cousin went there and is now studying microbiology or chemical engineering or something like that in UCLA. I think "University High" in SF is the place to be for private high schools- or Lowell High which is public but with rigorous standards and testing just to get in.

I think you hit the nail on the head with Tiburon. My sister lives there; the public schools are so good she never bothered to look into private schools. The Parks and Recreation department have many creative and fun programs for children of Tiburon. Outdoor activities are many and varying. There is a strong sense of community with a small town feel, though The City is very close at hand. All of that in one of the most beautiful settings in California. It's definitely worth looking into.

I agree. Tiburon is so beautiful, charming, quaint, quiet and a quick ferry ride to and from the City. I love SF, but one thing I always feel sorry for is the children. There's no space. I see kids playing on city sidewalks all the time. Growing up in the midwest, we played in huge lawns. I'd say Tiburon. Very cool place and you're so close to the City. Like Powersails said, it has such a small town feel....that is wonderful.

If you're going to move into the city, Mission High School is the most renouned high school in the country Hahahaha...that is a JOKE!!!!
