And my day-to-day is whites, African Americans, Asians and Hispanics. If you live and work in the Marina, then your day is probably just white.

I think there are a lot of races in San Francisco, and a fair amount of different races. The discussion should center around segregation rather than diversity. San Francisco is very segregated.

Racial Breakdown of San Francisco:

White, 58.7%
Black, 7.3%
Native American, 0.7%
Asian, 18.4%
Hispanic, 19.7%

I'd say that's a lot more than "a bit Chinese". Not to mention you completely left off the huge Hispanic population and African American population.

San Franciscans always cite "the Mission" as the one Mexican stronghold in their city. I never hear another neighborhood mentioned in the discussion. Guess what there are lots of in the Mission? Young, white people. While I appreciate the integration/harmony inherent to this influx of new people (as opposed to more segregated parts of the city), the gentrification leaves little room for said Mexican community to flourish as it had.

There are significant numbers of people of Mexican ancestry throughout eastern San Francisco. Look on the US Census website yourself... they have demographic maps.

That's like saying, "there are no Chinese people in San Francisco. Well, besides Sunset and other parts..."

from city-data:
Quote:
Races in San Francisco:

* White Non-Hispanic (43.6%)
* Chinese (19.6%)
* Hispanic (14.1%)
* Black (7.8%)
* Other race (6.5%)
* Filipino (5.2%)
* Two or more races (4.3%)
* Other Asian (1.5%)
* Japanese (1.5%)
* Vietnamese (1.4%)
* American Indian (1.2%)
* Korean (1.0%)
* Asian Indian (0.7%)
37% of the residents are foreign born. (22.6% Asia, 7.8% Latin America, 5.1% Europe)
It's not a homogeneous city.

Yup, you're right! It might not be like L.A., but we have more than our fair share of Latino residents... not only in the Mission, but all over the city, especially in the eastern parts. I live in the southeast, and there are plenty here - not that it matters, since I don't care what anyone is (as long as they're good people). Oh, and I think the Excelsior district actually has more Latinos than the Mission... I used to work at Excelsior library, and used my Spanish on a daily basis.

Ironically, my 1/2 Mexican roommate/friend is sitting next to me as I'm writing this. But I speak more Spanish than she does, and she's never been to Mexico - LOL.

Like beone said, that probably has to do with which neighborhoods you're in. I live right between Visitacion Valley & Bayview/Hunter's Point, and usually I'm the ONLY White person in a room or store! I see people of all backgrounds - mostly Asian and Black, but also plenty of Latinos and Pacific Islanders. We are less diverse than some big cities (LA, NYC, etc.), but it's still far from homogeneous. Anyway, who cares? It is what it is, and I don't think anyone's purposefully trying to drive out the non-Whites... at least nobody outside of the government. But I do notice lots of talk about "gentrification" in my neighborhood, which kinda ticks me off. I'll save that for a political forum debate, though.

I think it's a valid view, and agree. I live in downtown so my impression is obviously different. It's just I heard a post when someone said "in Bay Area you can find almost someone from any country..." and then started to list every country. I don't think SF is THAT diverse.

But as for whites, hispanics, asians, pac islanders - those make up the majority of the population.
