About how long is the commute from San ramon to Napa
I'm getting some conflicting thoughts on where to live. I like the East Bay but if the commute is Really, really bad into Napa- then I might as well forget that one. How long do you think it is? because don't forget- hubby needs to also commute to SFO on some days...... Am I better off in Santa Rosa? Are the schools ok there? I was feeling confident on Walnut Creek or Danville and now I'm getting nervous again!!! Help!!!

The commute from The East Bay to Napa is not that bad because your driving in the opposite direction of traffic on 680. This morning for example I drove from San Francisco to Concord and 680 from Walnut Creek all the way up to Concord was smooth sailing while the other side was really heavy.
If you take 680 N from San Ramon, I dont see any traffic jams except maybe a small one at the Benicia Bridge(toll) but in the am hours, far more traffic is headed into Contra Costa, not leaving.
Then if you take 780 to 80 to 29....I dont see any normal jams in that area that should really impede you that much.
Id say door to door would be 35-45 mins on a good day.

And as far as Santa Rosa,
101 from there to San Francisco is one of the worst commutes in the Bay Area and youd be driving in it. The alternative is Hy 12 which at that stretch is a country road that winds through vineyards...to me that sounds dangerous and iffy as far as drivetimes.

What about Clayton?
Not far from BART, more easily accessible to Napa imo and its a really nice area right at the base of Mt Diablo. Lots of nice homes around there too.

They're right about the commute between Santa Rosa and SF being ugly. US 101 is usually slow and it gets slower crossing the bridge. Then it's all city streets to wherever you want to go in SF.
I still think that the area around Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Lafeyette (along the BART line for access to SF) is your best bet. And the commute north to Napa should be OK.
BTW, did you read the thread on this forum by YasminD? She's moving from New York. Her husband has a job in Napa and she wants to work in San Francisco.

I have done the communte from Walnut Creek to Napa several times for clients. Traffic is usually not too bad going or coming. Average commute time was 45 minutes.

Looking in and around Clayton is a very good suggestion. Avoid any thoughts of a very long commute through Alameda OR Contra Costa counties. Folks, it isn't going to get any better !!!!!

If he's commuting to Napa, then I would think that coming from Clayton would really be slow because he's going with the commute traffic until he gets to Walnut Creek.
