I have family who live both in No. Cal and So. Cal - and they all brag about how nice the weather is, but at the same time they complain about how boring it is. Yes, the parts of Cali we're talking about have pretty good weather most of the time, with the occasional unusual weather of too much rain, cold, or hot.
But the same similar weather gets boring. You need some variety in life. If you're used to the same good weather almost everyday, you start to take it for granted. It's like a flick, you can't watch the same flick all the time. You need variety to enjoy the cold, the hot, the dry, the wet, and so on.
I'm getting kind of bored with this SF vs NYC talk. They're so much different cities. SF is - country, boring, hills/small mountains/dry and brown during the warmer months, boring, small, and boring once again.
NYC is - no comparison to SF - I won't even waste the time to explain. Just ask my cousins who visited NYC from SF. They were suffering from depression when they returned back home to SF from NYC.

I wish I could say the same. You are lucky. The people are what I wish I could change here in SF. The weather and natural environment is what I wish I could change in NY. The people in NY have been very nice to me. Just the opposite of your experience. But I do not know how much time you have spent in either place. I lived in SF, and now in Berkeley. I worked in NYC for a few months and lived in Brooklyn during that time but my work was mostly in Manhattan, some in Brooklyn and some in Queens. The people in NY > people in SF from my experience. But that's just me. I guess it depends on the individual and how long you are there.

If someone from SF can't tell the difference between NYC and SF they are either too proud to admit it, have not been to NYC or have not spent significant time there, or just prefer "small time" stuff rather than the "real deal". New York IS the "real deal". San Francisco wants to be and tries but it just isn't. But I don't understand why many just can't accept it. I am originally from Kansas City and we didn't even pretend to think we had as much to offer as bigger cities. It is what it is, why make up stuff?
In any case, if someone is ask for advice people should try to be objective and leave out your personal biases. There is NO WAY SF has as much to offer than NYC. But it does have a lot of nice things going for it and would be a wonderful place to live for the right type of person.
And the thing about people in NYC are rude seems overblown. Well, honestly, to me down right ridiculous. Everyone there has been very nice to me, nicer than in SF.

The true sf-lover enjoys his or her city being only 49 sq miles. They don't want their city to be as large as nyc nor do they think it is.

You can have a SF versus a Seattle, or a Dallas, or a Houston, or a Boston, or a Miami, or maybe DC, but all those cities are middle weights. NYC is a super heavy weight on steroids. LA, Chicago, and maybe DC are close to heavy weights, but lack the super heavy weight and steroids of NYC.
I'm very familiar with SF and all of its surroundings, just like I am with NYC and its surroundings. It just makes me laugh so hard when I hear SF people put dumpy small boring SF over NYC. Haaaahaaaahahaaahahahahahaa! It amuses me everytime I return to read those SF over NYC posts. Hilarious!
The true reality is that SF people put SF above NYC because SF is country, small, boring, slow, dull, minute, lackluster, tiny, unexciting, dull, depressing, uninspiring, snails pace, sleepy, humdrum, repititive with the same ol' thing and nothing new. SF people like that about SF and hate NYC because it's the exact opposite. Haaahahahahahahah! ROTFL!!!! Undoubtedly true though.

Just like I was saying. NYC is too much for you to handle - so quit comparing it to NYC. That's whay I keep saying no comparison!
Plus, I bet you drive your farm tractor - you can't drive a tractor in NYC!

To be fair, SF does have very nice scenery. I can get up into the hills to ride my bike easily (It was cool riding around Central Park though). I am bored to death here. But I think it all depends. SF is not too big, not too small for many people. The BART is just big enough to get to most places. Although I do not seem to fit in here for others I think it may be a perfect fit.
I can sink my teeth into New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris, Los Angles, etc. but not San Francisco. People talk about sophistication in SF but I don't see it. Everyone here tells me the nightlife is so great here. But I get so bored even with that here. I don't even go out at night anymore. They talk about the how much culture SF has. I've been too many places to fall for that. I have basically given up.
But SF is better than most cities in the U.S. I give it that much. But for me I have been to too many places around the world, lived in too many places with a lot more going on to settle to live in SF.
Again, it just depends. NYC can be too much for some. SF can be just right for others. But there is also another caveat to living in SF, it is some of the people are a little quirky.
