Commuting from Tracy to Downtown San Franciso (San Jose, San Francisco: middle-class, houses)

Hello, I work in the city and thinking about buying in Tracy. Would like to hear from people in the same situation, how long does the commute take and what is the best route? I would drive from Tracy to Dublin BART and ride BART to SF.

Separately, can anyone share info about Tracy? From I've read, South and West parts are considered superior to the rest of town. The area i'm looking at is Southeast (~McArthur and Schulte). thx.

Terrible commute, and expensive too. When you take operating costs for your car and train fare into account, you could certainly afford to move closer. Personally, I really like the peninsula, and I don't think that it's so expensive that it's not worth the shorter commute to the major job centers.

If you can leave after 7:30-8:00 in the morning, then your morning commute might be tolerable. The evening commute is bad until about 7:00 in the area.

You might try Bay Area 511 website to get an estimate of the commute times.

The area you are looking at is pretty decent, but has several expensive neighborhoods (similar sized houses went for $75-$100K difference in prices depending on the developer). It's also a 10-25 minute drive to the North end of town where all of the shopping and restaurants are.

You may want to look at Corral Hollow and Eleventh or areas west of there for a shorter in-town commute. The area north of Grantline near Corral Hollow is a very nice, but older area (1990-ish).

Stay away from Mountain House. They have a strong middle-class gang problem (yes, such a thing exists and is a prevalent in Northern California) and very high forclosures.

I can't help but agree with the others, that is an awful commute. I had a friend that did that and ended up moving to Brentwood- still a ways out but it cut her commute time by half. Good luck to you!

If your budget puts you in tracy and you work in sf, go to towns like antioch, brentwood, pittsburg (south of highway 4) or concord if you can swing it. All these towns are close enough to the pittsburg bart or concord bart that you could take the train to sf and not drive. tracy to sf would be a nightmare, hell just driving from tracy to the dublin bart will be a nightmare and your commute will have just started.

I think you need to decide what is more important: living in Tracy or working in San Francisco. I can't begin to imagine the toll that would take on family life (if you have one.)

One of my coworkers commutes to San Jose from Roseville, in a luxury car no less. Has a family too. All I can think whenever I see him is, that better be a nice bed waiting for you when you get home.

you're coworker is what we call kamikazie commuters. Manteca to marin type of people. If you are one of those people willing to commute anywhere for a nice house than go for it. I suggest some practice runs so you can see what you are instore for.
