Default young couple moving to SF bay area from NH

My boyfriend and I are moving to the SF bay area in Jan of this year ( as in 2 months from now! ) We are both from NH and I will be attending FIDM in downtown SF near chinatown so I will need to drive there a few days a week. We have about 1200/mo at MOST to spend on apt+utilities. Can anyone suggest safe-ish places to live for that amount of money? We don't have to be in the rich areas at all..but we don't want to have to worry about our safety ( being around a lot of violence, drugs, houses/cars being robbed ) Any help would be so wonderful since neither one of us knows CA at all! ( I am living in san diego right now but other than that...i've never seen any other areas. Thanks!

Burlingame sounds like your best bet if public transit isn't important to you, and the area close to 101 isn't dangerous at all (like it is if you go further down the peninsula). It attracts a good element, and it's a cute town too.

I agree with sonarrat...Burlingame is very nice...but might be tough on 1200 / mo for all expenses....But do look in that general area. There is good public transportation on CalTrain...from the Burlingame station to S.F. [third street area] Also look at San Mateo....

I see apartments in Burlingame for $1000-1100 all the time.

You will definitely have to look outside of the city. There is no way you will get an apartment in the city that is safe for $1200 incl utilities unfortunately. The good news is that a lot of places outside of the city have better weather - just have to factor in commuting costs.

yep. $1200 a month isn't going to get you much. I live in Santa Rosa, which is 45 minutes north of the City and I can hardly find anything decent for that price. look on craigslist for apartments - find an area with rent you can afford, google the distance to where you have to go in SF and make your decision from there. And, remember commute traffic is horrendous. 45 minutes from where I live to the City takes about 2 hours in the morning/night rush hour traffic.
