Default Yacht Building/Restoration

I am going to school for yacht building/restortation. It's a big industry in Newport, RI, but i'd rather live in san francisco.

Is this a possible career choice?

Also how ghetto is San Fran? I hear oakland is a dump. I live in New Jersey right now and my friend from San Fran says Oakland is a joke compared to what we have here. He says NJ ghettos are far worse.

Compare Newark, Camden, Patterson NJ to oakland or any bad part of San Fran.

As far as cost of living, i hear it is high. But my friend says it is probably cheaper than here.

So is San Fran cheaper and safer than the NJ/NYC metropolitan area?

I'd say West Oakland and Paterson are pretty comparable. I would also agree that prices are similar.

You can't accurately paint San Francisco with such a broad brush, there are low income, run down areas just as there are on the East Coast.

You'll have to visit the Bay Area and see for yourself where you are comfortable - both in terms of physical safety and finances.

Most any area outside of San Francisco in the Bay Area will be less expensive, just as the NYC boroughs and NJ are relative to Manhattan. It really is a matter of degrees, you won't find moderately priced anything compared to prices in other parts of the country.

There's a wooden boat center in Sausalito, and many of the yards around the bay do restoration work. Grab a copy of Latitude 38 and check out the ads. online they're at Latitude 38 - The West's Leading Sailing and Marine Magazine
