The Castro is known for being home for being the district that many gays live, in but to be honest, I think gays are generally all over the city. A lot of gays here live outside the city as well.

You make them sound like an attraction at the zoo, LOL. Just as in EVERY part of the US, "the gays" live anywhere and everywhere in the Bay Area... but the Castro (in SF) is the official "gay district," so that's where you'd find the highest concentration of gay men - the lesbian neighborhoods are supposedly Noe Valley & Bernal Heights, but once again they live in all parts of the city.

No worries! Mostly the original post sounded that way, but I'm sure (hopefully) they didn't mean it badly either... just sounded funny when they said "is there a district where they all live," like they ALL could live in that 6-block radius. Considering homosexuals make up approx. 10% of the entire U.S. population, I'd assume they live just about everywhere - though obviously we have a good chunk of that percentage.

I live with a gay male & bi woman near Bayview... and I'm a straight woman, in case anyone hasn't figured that out by now. When I actually think about it, NONE of my gay friends - male or female - live in the Castro. They do party there a lot, but it's become too pricey for "normal" (financially) people of any orientation. Wish it wasn't so expensive, or I'd totally live there myself!

About 40% of San Francisco is gay- if this figure needs to be corrected-please do.

The 'Castro' is indeed the gay center- but gay people do live everywhere in the city and in the bay area. I have not lived in the city for many years, and not visited since 2003- would like to spend a week there soon- one of my favorite places.

Hmmmm... 40% seems a bit high, but probably not too far off! I've tried to research this statistic, but can't find any consistent answers - they range from 12%-40%, so I'm guessing it's somewhere in the middle. Oh well, doesn't matter to me anyway.
