Relocation to Bay area...job in Stockton
Does anyone have information on am/pm commute time from SF to Stockton? Gay 30's single professional relocating from east coast. Tennis 2-3x/week. So far Pleasanton seems to be viable option, with ease of BART to SF for some evenings and weekends and eastward am commute to Stockton. I could tolerate 45 -60 min commute, but longer would be nuts. Or am I delusional to think that any large city other than Sacramento is feasible? Please share some of your local expertise! Thanks!

From San Francisco expect at LEAST 2 hours during rush-hour... I used to live in Stockton, and even at night it took over an hour to get to SF. Your best bet is to live over/near the Altamont Pass, around Tracy or Livermore... not my favorite towns, but they're affordable & a closer commute. Pleasanton or Dublin wouldn't be too bad either, but could take over an hour each way.

Living in Pleasanton and commuting to Stockton is reverse commute, but there's a tendency to frequent accidents in the reverse commute direction on 580. High speeds and inclines tend not to mix well. On a good day though, under an hour each direction.

LOL forget 580, 205 can slam shut faster than....... well I guess I can't use that country colloquialism on this forum. Go ahead and live in Stockton, this is CA, Gay people live everywhere, even up in the country.
I still can't figure out why y'all endure commuting more than 10 minutes at all.

They're widening 205 so that should be much improved by the end of 2008.

I kind of agree, but having lived in Stockton for 3 years (in college), I can also understand not wanting to live there. Not because of him being gay, since like you said, that won't be an issue anywhere around here... but Stockton is probably my LEAST favorite part of Northern CA. You could make a decent life there, especially since prices are lower than here, but it really isn't a nice place. If you (OP) want a shorter commute, maybe consider the nearby towns of Lodi, Morada, or French Camp - small towns which are slightly nicer. In Stockton, I'd recommend staying on the north-west side, near Brookside, Grouse Run, or Lincoln Village/Ben Holt... you could also consider south Sacramento, which is okay, but I don't know enough to suggest specific parts.

Are you nut's south sac is much more dangerous than any part of stockton. I live in stockton and have my whole 27 years of life and i would never live in south sac. Its just much more ghetto than the most ghetto part of stockton.
I would say the amount of badmouthing stockton is like biased most people who badmouth stockton have little experience of the town.It actually is a nice place to live you have crime like anywhere else but crime tends to follow those who are not all soo innocent. I have never been a victim of violent crime yea my car got broken into but i left it parked in the street over night and forgot the radio face plate was on so it was stolen. Anyways stockton is not a bad drive to sf for the weekend parties at night in the clubs.

Also, consider Mountain House. This is a master planned community between Tracy and Stockton filled with mini-mansions. Because of the high number of foreclosures and construction of new homes, you can buy a nice home for less than $500K

if you have a job in stockton i would recomend in stockton :
brookside or a spanos west park neighborhood with a gate or the lincoln area. Stockton has a lot of crime issues.
