Default What is the Castro and Hayes Valley like now?

Back in the mid 80's I lived on Haight St at Lyon across from Buena Vista Park. I worked for the now defunct SPNB at the main branch at One Embarcadero Center. I used to walk over to the Castro. When the weather was nice, the walk through Buena Vista Park was beautiful.

What is the area like now?

I would like to correct the title of this thread to read "Castro" not "Casteo" but there doesn't seem to be an option to that??

I'll take care of that for ya.

To answer your question, those are still very nice areas... the Castro probably hasn't changed too much, aside from the ridiculously high rental/real-estate costs! My family has been in the Bay Area since 1983, but seeing as I was only 7 years old, I'm probably not the best to compare it then & now.

Hayes Valley is a bit different. The section of the Central Fy that ran above Octavia Bl is gone and in its place is a treelined boulevard that has really breathed new life in that area.

HV is a very trendy part of town these days with lots of interesting retail and excellent dining options.

Thanks!

I am actually thinking about returning to SF. I started this thread to get input from folks that live there now.

Pleasanton4EVA is on a distinguished road
Well, _Charles_, judging by your post in the topic "White Flight from San Jose" (link http://www.city-data.com/forum/1235808-post12.html), I don't think you'll be very happy at all in Castro Valley. I don't think Hayes Valley is all-white either.

The Castro District is pretty overwhelmingly white. Don't know about Castro Valley.
Hayes Valley is very mixed, with pretty much every ethnic group that lives in SF living there. The nearby Lower Height seems to be mostly white but with a pretty diverse mix of different ethnic groups as well.
