Just reading the homicides and following on the map where the incidients took place really bothered me. Most of the victims (about 90%) were shot by a gun. Sorry, I just can't yahn and say it's not a big deal. As times worsen economically in this nation so will crimes.

Cityboy, my point is that the crime needs to be cleaned up and not ignored and unfortunately due to current economical times things will get worse. Do you want that to happen and then say oh it isn't a big deal because there is crime every where?

Please tell me who is ignoring the crime? The media focuses on it and everybody in America knows about Oakland and it's crime problems. So who's ignoring it again? Things are not getting worse here, when was the last time you stepped foot in Oakland?

Cityboy, the last time I "stepped foot in Oakland" was last week as a matter of fact. People are either ignoring or dismissing the crime. Why aren't more police on the beat? People in the Bay protest all kinds of things but not the war in their own backyard. Why do you and I have to keep debating this? The bay area and Oakland/Richmond in general would be better if the element of crime was given greater attention.

Are you going to give the city the cash to hire more police? We paid a parcel tax for four years to get the number of officers increased, it FINALLY happened -- and our do nothing mayor (don't blame me I voted for De La Fuente) then put another parcel tax to pay for more officers and it got voted down -- so he cancelled the upcoming police academy. Cops are retiring ALL THE TIME -- so we finally hit the magic number but in a few months we're going to be down again....
We're facing HUGE deficits in this city, thanks to all sorts of cronyism, Bubba politics and sheer stupidity.
Crime is but ONE of the massive problems we face. And crime is a symptom of a myriad of issues from horrible schools to bad parenting. We have a massive foreclosure problem, our schools are in dire shape, our roads are falling apart, we're a city of renters, so our tax base is low to begin with because a lot of the housing stock isn't changing hands. Our mayor is a self deluded "do gooder" who it appears can't do anything -- including actually working a full work week.
So yeah, dear. We know it's bad. But we live here, and we do what ever small part we can to make it better. We really don't need people from outside of where we live to come in and tell us -- you know, you really live in a ****hole, you should do something about it.
So unless you're willing to roll up your sleeves and help -- SHUT UP and mind your own business.

Yes us Oakland residence are ignoring and dismissing the crime. Moderator cut: Personal attack this is your "shtick" to obsess over Oakland's crime rate but it's getting old.

For what it's worth, there are more police on the beat now. We used to see cops patrolling once a week at most (not counting CHP). Now I see our beat cop in and around the neighborhood on an almost daily basis (and no, not usually because he's busting someone! He's said with the new cops this fall, he's now doing less "radio chasing" and thus has more time to be here. That's progress, in my book. Still a long way to go, but small steps count for something.
And also on the upside, we're on track to finish 2008 with a lower murder rate than last year, so that's also progress (albeit tiny, tiny degrees of progress!)
