Thank you for posting this aswedc. This information should be a wake up call to everyone. Anybody who's a tourist and thinking of visiting these two places--don't. But if you ignore my advice and decide to go there at night, always walk in the middle of the street (not the sidewalk), go directly to your destination without leaving the main drag, and carry mace (bring multiple cans if necessary).

...What the hell? Do you mean on the center divider, or actually in the middle of the road? Because not very many roads in Oakland have center dividers, and at any rate that's extremely dangerous.
